Fall in Munich

Originally we had planned in staying in the Hamburg area for the whole two week vacation, but them found that dear friends of ours would be relatively close to us–a 10 hour drive away in Munich! (That gives you an idea of how far away from us they live.) So we picked the older girls up from horse camp Saturday afternoon and hit the road early Sunday morning. We arrived tired and hungry but so happy to have made the journey! We hadn’t been to Munich as a family and the fall colors were absolutely stunning.

We stayed at Campingplatz München Thalkirchen which had only basic amenities that were not great. But it is located along the Isar River surrounded by forest which was particularly beautiful at the time due to the changing leaves. We only had a few days in Munich and wanted to focus on time with friends so didn’t see all the sights. We did find a fun indoor trampoline park which was great for the kids to have something to do while reconnecting. As they get older, whenever we get together with our friends and their kids (who our kids likely do not know very well) we have noticed that it helps to have a specific activity to help break the ice. We’ve done escape rooms, trips to the beach, bowling and this time picked AirHop. Then the next day we found a (pretty difficult!) scavenger hunt via world city trail that took us around the city giving us a chance to sightsee while giving the girls something fun to focus on. We also walked around the Altstadt, sampling apples from the farmers market and doing a bit of shopping.

Then it was time to say goodbye to our friends and explore a bit on our own. We checked out the Deutsches Museum (geared towards a bit older crowd and not very well organised but full of interesting information), went to a little fair that had a few fun rides (mostly for the younger crowd) and stalls with traditional food and wares, and then saw “Die Schule Der magischen Tiere” in the most adorable movie theater. All in all, a good trip!
