Winter in Winterberg

We usually try to find someplace somewhat close by to go for a few days during winter break and for the 2021-2022 winter break, we spent one week at Bergresort Hochsauerland in Winterberg-Neuastenberg. Steffen’s family has connections there so we have spent a fair bit of time at the resort over the years. It is a beautiful place with a few delicious restaurants, a short walk to a small ski hill and sledding area and has some fun indoor activities available–swimming, go kart racing and a kids’ club.

The snow situation is very iffy so there is no guarantee that snow sports are an option at any given time, but luckily there are some other fun things to do in the area. When we got there, there was literally only one small patch of snow and miles and miles of grass. Not very promising! But we passed the time with games, fondue and a trip to the bowling alley.

And then the snow started to fall! The whole place turned into a winter wonderland. It was magical! The ski “mountain” there is very small, but perfect for our girls who haven’t had a lot of skiing experience. All four girls took lessons for a couple of days while Steffen and I enjoyed some time to ourselves. The big girls became experts at the lift, even skiing together-alone (LOL) after their lesson ended. Skiing has a special place in my heart because I found my community through skiing in college, so my heart soars whenever I see our girls enjoying it.

Finally, we enjoyed a picture-perfect horse and carriage ride through snow-covered forests. We really enjoyed our experience with Pferdefuhrhalterei and highly recommend them. The whole family had a great time!
