Getting to Agra

**I totally forgot that I had written this in the Notes app on my phone but never actually created the post. So it’s a bit out of order, but wanted to include it.**

On Tuesday afternoon we arrived in Agra after a 5+ hour drive. This time we took two cars since it was a bit squished with the 6 of us plus luggage on the way from Delhi to Jaipur. We hired the drivers through the same company but were not as impressed with them as with our other driver. They were a bit more aggressive in their driving and in their pushiness. But we made it safe and sound and that’s all the matters! We did see some surprising things in the highway including cows standing in the road as cars raced by, people riding in the back of trucks with just thin ropes to hold on to, drivers driving in the opposite direction (including ours for a bit to get to the rest stop) and monkeys all over the gas station. Steffen said it best, “Insane.  Still! Even after 2+ weeks here I am still speechless quite often.”

We checked into our hotel, ate some lunch and got right to work on our schoolwork. The homeschooling is going pretty well when we get a chance to sit down and do a few hours. Between sickness and travel days, we haven’t gotten as many days in as I would like. But I am impressed with the girls’ abilities to concentrate when needed and know that they are learning so many other things as well. Wednesday we also did schoolwork, went swimming, and just relaxed at the hotel, enjoying the game room and restaurant. There was a conference going on a the hotel so there are many Indians from all over the country who were very curious about our family.

Aside for our big day out that I wrote about a few days ago, we mainly lived hotel life in Agra. On Saturday we left and headed back to New Delhi with an Uber driver that was determined to make the 6 of us and our luggage fit despite his trunk being full of gas bottles. I will say, in India they always make it work!

  1. As I said before, India is an acquired taste! If you stay there long enough, you get used to their culture and different ways of doing things, and when you return to the US our culture will seem strange. When the British governed India from 1858 to 1947, many of the British stationed there (the flexible, open-minded, adventurous ones) never wanted to leave India to go back to England. It took us about a month to get used to the US after we returned from our 2 years stay in Greece. Enjoy your great adventure!
