Activities in Nelson

During our two weeks in Nelson, New Zealand, we did some schoolwork, some work-work (Steffen), lots of baking, movie nights and relaxation, but we also fit in some fun activities in/near Nelson. In the girls’ advent calendars I did a mix of candy/little trinkets and activities, so I had done a little bit of research before we arrived of things to do in the area. We found some fun things to do and all fell in love with the town and surrounding area.

One morning we headed over to Cable Bay Adventure to try out their Skywire, “a scenic ride with a shot of adrenaline flying high above the forest canopy”. It was a very fun experience in a beautiful location! It was very cool to see the old growth forest from above. There was also a small petting zoo, and Luisa had fun taking photos of the animals!

One rainy afternoon we headed to the trampoline park to burn off some energy and move our bodies. It was a small place but there was enough space to jump, flip, run and play. From there we went to dinner at a Thai place in town and reminisced about our good times in Thailand a few short months ago. What a beautiful journey we are on!

We had wanted to go mini-golfing together one afternoon but the rain had other plans, so we pivoted and went back to the little movie theater in town. We watched Zootopia 2 and enjoyed some laughs together. I really loved having a movie theater so close by! Then another afternoon, Steffen, Charlotte and Olivia went mountain biking, so Hannah, Luisa and I checked out the mini-golf course in town. It was a fun little course, and then we walked along the beach and played on the playground for a bit.

The mountain biking was also a huge hit!

On our way out of Nelson, as we made our way to our next destination, we stopped at Buller Gorge Swing Bridge. It was rainy, so we didn’t spend very much time there but it was beautiful and interesting. In 1929 there was a major earthquake there and you could see where the earth had shifted. Fascinating! It was a great stop along the way to move our bodies, get a little fresh air and learn a bit about the region.

We really enjoyed our time in Nelson and could see ourselves returning for a longer stay one day. The town was the perfect size, there was plenty to do in the surrounding area and the nature was beautiful!
